Scott started tapping yesterday!! It was a warm but icy day. Conditions were ok; he didn’t need snowshoes but the snow-covered icy sections made it tricky.
Feb 6 is the earliest we've ever started tapping. We've got a ways to go. Tapping is just the first step.
What's "tapping"? Scott heads up the sugar woods behind the house and visits each tree, drops the line, drills a new hole with his battery-pack drill and gently taps the spile in place with a small hammer.
50 hours is how long it usually takes to do all 2500 taps. Yesterday he completed part of the first of 4 mainlines.
Meanwhile, there are lots of seen and unseen things going on that mean spring is in the air: barred owls are pairing up, foxes and fishers are mating and a chickadee was calling today in a sweetly spring way.
Anything could happen over the next few weeks, but still, spring is on its way!
