We collected just enough sap for a “priming boil” - but not enough to make syrup yet. After showers, temperatures dropped and the sap slowed to a small trickle. The camp smelled like spring for awhile! Now we wait for more sap....

Scott is up in the woods again, tapping. We were discussing this morning how most other producers in this area have done their first boil already...but they are on vacuum systems, as far as we know, while we rely completely on gravity for our our sap to run. In addition, we’re that much higher in altitude - even compared to Earltown itself - and we tend to experience a few degrees lower than everyone else. That’s ok. We’ll get there. The sap will run in its own time and we’ll be ready.

8:20 pm Awesome run and boil today! Scott just got home. Cleaned up the tanks and left with the sap running hard - about 10" an hour. A bit of supper and then back down to check again. It's supposed to get very cold by around midnight, gradually dropping to minus 7 by around 1 am. So the sap will slow and eventually stop. How much will we have in the tanks tomorrow? Don't know. We do know that they'll be back at it tomorrow. Samara? She had enough energy to actually play this afternoon for...

9:15 am Firing up at 11 am today! Bob Williams (our mentor and original owner of the farm before 1994) will be firing today - a treat! How does the coming week look for sap? We'll see...but the nighttime temps don't look very cold at this point. We really would love to see minus 5.
